Renewals

One renewal is generally allowed if the item is brought in to the library on or before the due date, except for report books. Report books should be used as soon as possible and returned by the due date, so other students have a chance to use them.

Library Use Only

Reference materials, current magazine issues, and comic type books

Library materials are to be used, enjoyed, taken care of, and returned on time. Overdue notices will be sent home on a regular basis. Any student with a library item more than 30 days overdue will lose the privilege of checking out additional books until the overdue item(s) is returned. Damaged items should be returned immediately for evaluation/repair. Library items lost or damaged beyond repair will be billed. Please make sure all library materials are returned only to the West Valley School Library, as returns to other libraries result in substantial delays in clearing student records and may result in lost items.

Student Responsibilities

Certain responsibilities go along with the privilege of checking out a library book. We will discuss these responsibilities with your students over the course of the year. We would appreciate your support in this effort, which you can provide in the following ways:

Book Care

Library books are to taken care of.

Library books should stay dry and clean. A special place in the house should be designated the “School Library Book Place.” Ideally, this place should be separate from places where you keep family books and books from other libraries. This place should also be in an area that is safe from pets and very young children. If a library book is damaged, please make sure it is returned immediately so it can be repaired in the library. If a library book is lost or damaged beyond repair, please contact us by sending a note to school with your child addressed to the library.

Book Due Date

Library books are to be returned on time.

Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grade

Melrose students visit the library once each week. Books are checked out for a one-week period. It is very important that your child bring his/her library book back to school in time for the next library visit, because another library book cannot be checked out until the previously checked-out book is returned. Children are extremely disappointed when they cannot check out a library book during the class visit. Books returned early will be stored in a special box in the classroom so that library books are not lost or misplaced. Please help your child learn the responsibility of returning library books by encouraging him/her to bring the library book back to school on or before library day.

Grades 3 through 5

Melrose students visit the library once each week. Books are checked out for a two-week period. Books may be returned during the classroom visit or brought to the library during recess or lunch. Please help your child learn the responsibility of returning library books by encouraging him/her to bring their library books back to school on or before the due date.

Enjoy

Library books are to be enjoyed.

Please read to your child. Whether it’s an entire book or just one chapter, children enjoy having a story read to them. For younger children, you may need to re-read each book many times, as many children love to hear stories over and over again. If your child is not a good listener, shorten the time you spend with a book to an enjoyable length. This may mean that you just look at the book and talk about the pictures, or that you take several nights to read a short picture book. If your child is not enjoying the reading activity, stop reading and try again another time.
